Joseph R. Biden Jr. was elected the 46th president of the United States on Saturday November 7th after securing key votes in the battleground state of Pennsylvania. Trump had held a wide lead over Biden on the night of the election, but as mail-in ballots were counted, the result changed in Biden’s favor. The win in Pennsylvania gave Biden, the former vice president, enough electoral college votes to surpass the 270 votes needed to win the race.
"I understand the disappointment tonight," Biden said in his victory speech, on Saturday night in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. "I’ve lost a couple of times myself. But now, let's give each other a chance. Now is the time to heal in America." Biden, reached out to those voters who did not vote for him, promised to restore political normalcy and national unity to face up to the raging health and economic crisis.
Political analysts saw the reasons for Biden’s winning from the voters of women, people of color, and swing voters of old and young. Large numbers of voters became mentally and emotionally exhausted with President Trump’s four years of chaotic administration and divisive domestic policies, and they finally delivered their support to Biden.
Now, President Trump became the third elected president since World War II to lose re-election, and the first since 1992.
The result also provided a history making moment for Biden’s running mate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, who will become the first woman, first Black person, and first person of South Asian descent to serve as a vice president.
"While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities," Harris said.
Biden, who is soon to be 78, fulfilled his long ambition to enter the White House, and became the oldest candidate to be elected as president in American history. As the news was delivered that Biden had won, people jumped into the street to celebrate.
However, Trump has not accepted the defeat and his team have filed lawsuits in several key states that had close results to recount the ballots.
